Lexmark PrinTrio
1/19/2003

A few years ago, I bought the HP CopyJet-M. An early multi-function printer. Big, heavy, and expensive. 300 dots per inch. $2,500.

A few months ago, I bought the LexMark PrintTrio. Much smaller and lighter. 2400 dots per inch. $130.

The LexMark PrintTrio is a combination scanner and printer. The included software is set up to make copying easy (but the computer is involved in the process). It connects via USB, and includes software for Windows, Mac OS X, Mac OS 9.

Installation is a breeze. Plug it in, install the software, scan or print immediately. Scanning is easy, and you can either have it print the document, save the document, or pass it to your favorite app. Printing graphics looks great, and when printed to photo paper, looks like a processed photo.

Is it perfect? No. As I said, when you press the "copy" button on the printer, it doesn't just scan and print internally, it launches a program on your computer. Also, scanning takes place in two passes, which means that if you are trying to capture something that moves, it won't work. Not usually a problem, but there are some special cases.

But, this is a great little machine, and at the price it's absolutely incredible. I give it 8 out of 10 Oooos.
