I've mentioned elsewhere about the cats that share my house.  One of the problems is that they haven't gotten the concept of "cup of liquid", at least the cause and effect of rubbing against said cup.  I used to joke about getting a cupholder for my desk, and I finally found the right one.

It doesn't look like a cupholder, it looks like a stack of diskettes at first glance.  It's when you unfold it that it's true nature is revealed.

It's very stable.  See the plastic lip around the base?  It's a rubbery-base that gets a solid suction-grip on the desk surface, and makes it almost impossible to push over.  Unless you lift the corner of the lip, which releases the suction and it moves easily then.  A very nice bit of design work
