Monitor Mounting

A nice view of the Monitor hanging from its mount

The first step was to remove the non working arcade monitor from the cabinet. I found this part really scary. Monitors hold a huge charge even after they are unplugged. Touch the monitor in the wrong place and you could easily get electrocuted. Everything turned out ok and the monitor was removed from the front by removing a few bolts and carefully pulling it out.

I had two choices: use an arcade monitor or a pc monitor. I decided to use a pc monitor because I wanted to use the machine for pc games and other windows software.

The original monitor was 19 inch in size but didn't have any housing around it so therefore my 17 inch monitor fit perfectly inside. All I had to do was add a few boards to brace the monitor and let it hang down almost like the original arcade monitor.

I really like the design of the cabinet mounting because the monitor sits at an angle. One thing I was worried about for this project was how to get the monitor to look right in the cabinet. I had seen numerous projects on the internet where people had used a regular computer monitor and most of them didn't look right. It looked stupid to see a small white monitor sitting on a shelf in the cabinet. To correct this, I painted around the edges of the monitor black and used contact paper for the rest. The cabinet came with a plastic bezel which really looked cool. The glass covering was real glass (not plexi) and was tinted black. This was key I believe and gave the cabinet a very authentic look.

This is how the monitor looks from the front with the bezel and glass in place

Another shot of the monitor underneath the bezel. Please excuse the dirty monitor. I forgot to clean it off before taking the shot. :)
