The Software Area: what happened in 1999

  • VGATV for Windows (WinVGATV) driver

    On version (99.158):

Having tried VGATV before on a Trident 9440, the S3 Trio performed very well. To sum it up, this version works in 640x480 in all color depths, in DirectX (6.1 in Win98), video overlays (full screen flickering-kind-of-thing in Windows NT due to some blanking problem, probably, have to check it out). I tried some games (Monster Trucks 2 and Need for Speed III), some 3D benchmarks (Final Reality, 3DMark99) and all worked ok.

Modes that aren't working include those that don't also work in DOS (read below), but 800x600 works in DOS, so this is one area worth investigating. Turning off interlacing is also not a good idea.

All in all, I think it's enough for the moment. To use it, turn off the automatic saving of options, select the appropriate chipset and select either PAL or NTSC. That'll put the board into TV mode. Use the trick above to get out of it or swap between TV and VGA mode.
