Navy Achievement Medal

After coming home from my service in Vietnam I was assigned duty with the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division at Camp LeJeune, NC. Taking up my new job as Battalion Legal Clerk, I settled into the routine of stateside duty once again until the morning of August 30, 1971. On that morning word came down from the Company Commanding Officer that the Battalion would fall out in dress uniform at 0900 hours. No one really knew what was going on and after dressing and assembling at the designated area, the Battalion Sergeant Major called the Battalion to attention at the approach of the Battalion Commanding Officer, Major W. W. Widner. After the usual military protocol, the names of several Marines including, myself were called to present themselves to the Commanding Officer. It was at this time, and with Marine Corps pomp and ceremony, that the following citation, among others was read aloud to the Battalion

for superior professional achievement as set forth in the following

CITATION

"While serving with Headquarters, III Marine Amphibious Force in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 19 October 1970 to 14 April 1971, Lance Corporal Annis performed his duties in an exemplary manner. As a Draftsman with the G-4 Section, he displayed outstanding initiative and perseverance despite the extremely adverse conditions and difficulties associated with a combat environment. By his consistently high level of efficiency, he materially enhanced the operational effectiveness of his section and gained the respect and admiration of all who associated with him. Working tirelessly and with meticulous attention to detail, he accurately provided inventories of all real property and prepared blueprints drawn to scale of all Marine held property in the I Corps Tactical Zone. In correlation with this task, Lance Corporal Annis ascertained the monetary value of all existing facilities located at each cantonment by use of complex formulas and prepared accurate vouchers for each property transfer. During this period, Lance Corporal Annis was instrumental in the transfer of real property valued at fifteen million dollars, thereby contributing significantly to the accomplishment of his command's mission. Lance Corporal Annis's outstanding professional ability, untiring determination, and steadfast devotion to duty throughout his tour in the Republic of Vietnam reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps, and the United States Naval Service."

The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
