I have always loved working with wood and making things with my hands. When my husband Jason started building his arcade game, I had no problem with him buying a lot of tools. I even encouraged him to buy more tools, but when Jason wanted me to carve all of his side art for his game I was a little scared. Since I have not done a project quite like this I knew it would take a very long time and I wasn’t sure of my ability to make the characters look as good as the original artwork. My first arcade carving was donkey kong, I didn’t keep track of how long it took me (I don’t think I really wanted to know how long it was taking). I would have to guess that it took over 12 hours just to carve my first donkey kong.
I am very critical of my own work and if it wasn’t for all the great guys on web sites like byoac and arcade fever I would not be carving. So thank you for all of your nice comments and appreciation for my carvings. Carving is a very long and tedious process and without all of the excitement from everyone I don’t think I would have the energy to continue.
I don’t have much professional training in wood working. But I think my love for wood and my patience helped me bring my carvings to life. I put my heart into every piece I do and spend so much time in to everyone of them. None of my carvings are done, until I feel like I have gotten as close to perfect (well without going crazy) as I can. Since I put so much into my carvings I start to get attached to each project. I have recently realized that I miss them once they are gone. Especially if they are one-of-a-kind project such as the Brutus buckeyes project. After carving on the 2 brutus characters for 11 hours and then spending almost that much time painting them, I was getting a little tired of looking at them. It took three days and then they were shipped out. I didn’t realize, until I seen a picture of them at their new home, that I MISS BRUTUS!! I am sure Ben (the new owner of the buckeye's mascot carvings) will enjoy the them for a very long time.
I love carving wood, but it is work. I am completely self taught so I am still learning a lot about the art of carving wood. When I start a project I spend a lot of time thinking about what I need to do, how and where I need to start & since wood has an attitude of its own, things don’t always go as planned. I never know exactly what it will look like when I am done. I even amaze myself once I am done.
I am willing to try any project. Letters aren’t my favorite thing to carve but you never know, if you have an idea even if you haven’t seen it any where on the site... I would be more than happy to give your project a shot. All you have to do is fill out the EZ contact form. Located HERE Thank you for stopping by!! -Melissa Jones NICE CARVINGS
