Mustered Out Company G, 8th Cavalry Regiment Illinois on 17 Jul 1865 at Benton Barracks, St Louis,"A. Judson" or "Judson", as he was commonly known, was wounded in action on January 7, 1863. On that date there were two scouting expeditions along the Rappahannock River that the 8th Illinois Cavalry participated in. The next summer A.J. participated in the Battle of Gettysburg, while under the command of General John Buford during his famous delaying tactic on July 1, 1863. The 8th Illinois Cavalry participated in many Civil War battles including: Seven Days, Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Brandy Station.

Augustus first saw serious action at The Battle of Stones River and served in several foray's against John Hunt Morgan. Beginning April 26, 1863 his regiment was assigned to Colonel A. D. Streight and participated in several skirmishes that were designed to destroy southern railways. But Streight's exhausted, discouraged band was compelled to surrender on May 3rd to Nathan Bedford Forrest's Confederate forces at Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Augustus was sent to the infamous Libby prison at Richmond, Virginia, because but of his higher rank, but he was soon exchanged and released to return to his regiment.

His widow, Rebecca H. applied for a pension (#1154933) on March 27, 1920 at Michigan.

He died at Bolton, CT on February 11, 1883 and is buried at Buckland Cemetery, Manchester, CT
