How to Inspect & Replace the Drive Belt
1990-1994 Lexus LS400

By LexLS.com

Before doing anything read my disclaimer & safety info.

Notes

This is pretty easy to replace and it's even easier if you remove a few parts so you have some room to work. The drive belt should last around 60,000 miles or 72 months. It should be inspected and replaced if needed every 7,500 miles or 12 months.

Tools Needed: Parts Needed:

1) Remove the negative (-) lead on your battery and wrap it with a cloth, for safety reasons. If you want more room to work then take out the battery; it did help to have this out of the way.

2) Unscrew and remove this cover.

3) Remove this 10mm bolt to remove the main air intake. This gives you some more room to work.

4) Inspect the belt. Check for excessive wear, cracked edges, tears, and fraying. The repair manual says that cracks on the rib side of the belt are acceptable (like mine), but if chunks are missing from the ribs it should be replaced. Replace the belt if necessary, part #90916-02463.

Look up under the hood and you should see this sticker showing how the belt is routed so don't worry when you take it off. This also shows the location of the belt tensioner.

5) Using a 14mm socket, turn the belt tensioner counter-clockwise with one hand and slip the belt off with your other hand. I have my engine fan removed in this picture, but you can still remove the belt with the fan on.

Old vs. New

6) Check to make sure that the belt is lined up correctly on each pulley. If it isn't, now is the time to line it up.

7) Put back the covers in reverse order of removal. Write down in your records the date and mileage of your belt change.
