.: Joystick Restrictors4-way Joystick Restrictor Plates
True 8-way to 4-way joystick conversion.
Quickly convert your joystick from 8-way to 4-way operation and back without opening your
control panel or changing joystick actuators. This is a perfect solution for control
panels that don't have a dedicated 4-way joystick, or don't have room to add one. This
Joystick Restrictor physically limits the joystick from hitting diagonals for more
accurate 4-way gameplay, rather than a software or logic solution which only prevents
games from processing a diagonal input.
2-way Joystick Restrictor Plates
The 2-way Restrictors can rotate to be used
either vertically (Defender-style), or horizontally (Galaga-style). A very simple, yet
functional design!
Diagonal (Q*Bert, Congo Bongo)
Restrictor Plates
The diagonal restrictors perform more like
detents rather than a true limiter like the way the 4-way restrictors work. The reason is
because of how diagonals are registered: they require two adjacent microswitches to be
contacted simultaneously. This means if you totally block a 4-way direction, say UP for
example, then it would be physically impossible to register UP-LEFT or UP-RIGHT, as the UP
direction would be blocked. The result is that it's physically possible to hit all the
4-way directions with the diagonal restrictors, but the design of the new plates creates a
"near-deadzone" on the 4-way directions and doesn't allow full travel into them.
The diagonal's cutouts create a detent feel similar to the way the 4-way restrictors feel,
but a bit more exaggerated because the diagonal directions are opened up more and have
sharper radii on the 4-way directions.
MAME's input settings can be configured to increase playability of diagonal games,
also. The suggested settings for Q*Bert are:
Right = Down Right
Left = Up Left
Up = Up Right
Down = Down Left
Note: All Restrictors use the same hole pattern as the original 4-way Restrictors for
full compatibility with existing Mounting Plates. Customers who already own a Joystick
Restrictor kit can use the new Restrictors as well!

plates
Heavy 1/8" thick (10ga.) steel construction:
- Precision laser cut.
- Design has been tested with Happ Controls joysticks - Super, Ultimate, &
Competition.
Unique curved pattern (4-way & Diagonal):
- Developed after months of prototyping and testing.
- Diagonal blocking with the joystick shaft (versus the actuator size) results in the loss
of some 4-way travel. This unique 4-way pattern makes the most effective use of available
travel, while still maintaining diagonal blocking.
- Design is compatible with various joystick shaft diameters.
Interlocking plate design:
- Hardened steel alloy locating pin provides proper alignment.
- Install quickly under joystick dustcover.
Mounting plate
Durable 16ga. steel construction:
- Precision laser cut.
- Joystick holes match Happ Controls joystick base.
- Properly centers joystick for accuracy.
- Allows quick insertion and removal of the Restrictor plates.
- Includes hardware & shims for proper joystick installation.
** Alternate uses for mounting plate
**
The Mounting plate can be used for installing joysticks designed for metal control
panels into wood control panels (Ms. Pac/Galaga Reunion joystick, for example), if not
used with the Restrictor plates.
The mounting plates can also be used for a "modular" control panel layout to
let you quickly change out joysticks without disassembling them! For example, quickly
change out your Happ Super w/ your SNK LS-30's or trigger joystick! You would be
responsible for any additional wiring and quick disconnects that your joysticks may
require.

.: Q & AQ. Do I have to use
the mounting plate, and why is it necessary?
A. By using the mounting plate, the joystick is precisely centered because the joystick
holes are located to within .001" with respect to the restrictor plate holes. All you
have to do is cut a rectangular hole in the control panel, and the plates take care of
properly centering the joystick. To obtain the most accurate results with the restrictor
plates, the use of the mounting plate is recommended. However, if you decide not to use
the mounting plate, it can be used as a drilling template for your joystick and restrictor
plate installation holes.
Q. Why do you supply all the
hardware? Can I save $$ if I don't want the hardware?
A. The hardware that is supplied with the kit has been carefully chosen for proper
installation. The joystick mounting screws, for example, are heat treated alloy 1/4-20
with a sharp class 3A thread. These screws provide maximum engagement to the joystick
base's .23" diameter installation holes. This is a complete, engineered solution that
has been designed with the specific hardware in mind. You will achieve the best results by
using the supplied hardware.
Q. Why are the restrictor plates
screwed in place? Could they be attached with removable pins?
A. The threaded fastener provides the most secure connection between the Mounting plate
and Restrictor plates as possible while maintaining removability of the Restrictor plates.
For reference, the supplied screws are 1/4-20 x 3/8" long. If you wish to change them
to a different style, such as thumbscrews or a knurled head style, just match the thread
size and length. The use of a removable pin in lieu of the screw has been tested and
provides adequate results. Pins can be substituted for screws upon request. (Pictures of
both connections are shown in the pictures)
Q. Can I adjust the amount of
"restriction" I get from the plates?
A. Yes. The shim pack that comes with the kit allows the joystick to be shimmed up or
down, which dictates how much joystick travel is required to get the level of diagonal
blocking that "feels" right for you. If you would like to experiment with
different shim heights, you can use 1/4" flat washers as additional shims. See the
installation pictures for examples. This is another one of the key features of using the
mounting plate, you can vary your joystick mounting depth without routing your control
panel. Note: You can change the joystick shaft length without affecting the diagonal
blocking. Blocking is joystick angle dependant, not length dependant. For example, you can
change between the short & long shaft spacers on the Happ Controls Super Joystick
without affecting your diagonal blocking.
