The Cabinet

The Cabinet is fairly straightforward. It is designed around a 15" CRT monitor. The whole case is built from 3/4" thick melamine boards. Two 2' x 4' boards were needed, which were purchased from the local Home Depot for $10 each.

The sides were cut to 24" x 24", and then a jigsaw was used to curver corners and remove a 18"x6" piece of wood (again, corners rounded). Two shelves were cut to 18" x 17". Finally, the marquee panel is 3"x18" and the front panel is 5" x 18".

This is based on a 15" monitor. There is only 12" of clearance below the marquee for the monitor, so measure your monitor and adjust dimensions as needed.

The screw holes will be covered with white screw covers that are hammered onto the screws. These cost $1.78 at Home Depot. To use these screw covers, the screws need to be countersunk to the surface of the wood, but no farther.

Although it can't be seen from this angle, a 3" round hole was drilled in the back of the lower shelf to allow cables to go from top to bottom.

The edges are covered with Band-it Melamine Edging, which I purchased at Lowes, $9 for a 25 foot roll. The edging is pre-glued, so a household iron was all that was required to attach the edging to the board.

This is the stage where every small flaw made in cutting the curves will stand out, so be sure to have used a file to round the corner cuts well.

A 18" x 17" piece of pegboard was cut for the back, the cost of that board was $8

Total cabinet cost, $39.
