Elsie Elizabeth Annis Chase - 1928-2004

Source: Portland (Maine) Press Herald - Tuesday, March 23, 2004

Elsie Elizabeth Annis Chase, 76
WELLS -- Elsie Elizabeth Annis Chase, 76, of Wells, beloved wife of Daniel (Maurice) Chase, passed away March 20, 2004, at York Hospital, York , surrounded by four generations of her family. She died peacefully after a long bout with lung disease.
Born in Wells on Feb. 16, 1928, Elise was the daughter of Robert E. and Louie (Mellor) Annis. She attended Wells schools, graduating in 1947. Elsie missed two years of elementary school in the 1930's, courageously fighting off pneumonia in the days before modern antibiotics.
Elsie married Daniel on June 15, 1947. She spent her life as a mother and a housewife. She was a wife in the old style, a person who never sat down to eat until her own family was nearly finished because she wanted to ensure all had enough. Her children and their friends will fondly recall her hot milk cakes and her chocolate mayonnaise cakes. Elsie never got her driver's license until she was in her forties. She worked for several years as a chambermaid at the Norseman in Ogunquit.
Elsie successfully instilled in her children a spirit of independence in thought, word and deed.
Always a competitor, Elsie strived to succeed in whatever she did, whether it was bowling or playing her favorite game of cribbage. At cards, she was known for her ruthless play - while her grandchildren always seemed to win their first game of cards with her, they found it much tougher to win a second.
She was loved and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Her sisters, Lucille, Arlene and Marjorie predeceased her.
Besides her husband of Wells, she is survived by a daughter and five sons, Thomas and his wife, Carol, of Acton, Kathleen and her husband, Glenn Winslow, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Jack and his wife, Arlene of Wells, Paul and his wife, Debbie of Wells, Glen and his wife, Clara of Conway, Ark. and Stephen and his wife, Diane of Wells. Franklin Joseph Annis - 1854-1924

A Fort Collin's newspaper reported his obituary on December 19, 1924.
Fort Collins, Dec. 13 - Frank J. Annis, prominent Fort Collins attorney, pioneer of Northern Colorado and one of the members of the first faculty of the State Agricultural college, died at Estes Park shortly after noon Friday from the effects of a paralytic stroke suffered last July. Mr. Annis was born in Wisconsin {ed.note: should be Michigan} seventy five years ago. He came to Colorado in the late 1870's and settled in Greeley, where for several years he served as principal of the Greeley high school. In 1879 he came to Fort Collins to take chair of chemistry as one of the first faculty members of the Agricultural college, serving in this capacity for several years, until he took up the practice of law. He was a graduate of law from the University of Michigan and was one of northern Colorado's most able members of the bar. Early in July, while Mr. Annis was serving as city attorney of Fort Collins, he was stricken by paralysis. Since that time he has failed rapidly and for the last several weeks his condition has been considered hopeless.
Mrs. Annis, who has been staying at the Annis mountain home at Estes Park for the last few weeks, arranged yesterday morning for her husband to be brought to the home there so that she could take care of him. He was taken from the Fort Collins hospital in an ambulance this morning and taken to Estes Park. Shortly after his arrival there he died, the exertion of the trip, it is believed, proving too great, because of his weakened condition.
Mr. Annis, besides his wife, is survived by two sons, Claude, who lives in the state of Washington, and Wade, who lives on a ranch near Laramie, Wyo., and one daughter, Marjorie, who lives at Laramie. He is also survived by two brothers living in California.

James Annas 1774-1862

An account of his death was given by a grandson, James O. Hazelton, in a letter dated January 14, 1896, as follows: "My wife was with me at camp in Madison, Wis., during the winter of 1861-62.
Grandfather was living with his son Chauncey L. at Oconomowoc, Wis. at that time. On my way to Erie County, Pa., to which place I was taking my wife, we called to see my uncle and grandfather. It was nine o'clock at night when we arrived at his home four miles away. Supper over at 10:30 P.M., grandfather (then near 90) took my sash, belt, and sword, and put them on to show the little boys (now men with families) how he used to salute with the sword, the sabre practice, and many other things, for he had been a soldier in the war of 1812. He retired a little after eleven o'clock, never to rise again. At 12 o'clock we were summoned to his bedside where he recognized all of us, and at one o'clock sweetly went to his reward. We are not ashamed of his life and had no fears in his death."

From The Scarboro Heights Record V1 #4

Another of Scarboro's oldest and best esteemed residents passed away early Monday morning [October, 1902]. The well-known farmer and Justice of the Peace, Jerry Annis, died at the old homestead... Mr. Annis, who was in his 81st year, was born in Scarboro, where his father settled in 1793. He grew up with the country, and witnessed with patriotic pride its steady progress from the unbroken forest to present prosperity. He was honored by the confidence of his neighbors and a place at the Council Board during several years. Lewis Annis 1852-1897

Rhinelander News (Vindicator) - Rhinelander, WI - August 17, 1897

Lewis Annis, one of the earliest residents of this city, passed away at his home on the North side on Wednesday night at about 11 o'clock. Thursday morning the report was circulated that Lew annis was no more, but it was hard to convince his friends that such was the truth. Only the evening previous he was about town, to all appearances in the best of health. About 9 o'clock he went home and immdiately retired, making no complaint of not feeling well. His oldest son, Reggie removed his shoes for him and then laid down on a couch in an adjoining room. He was soon startled by his father's loud and heavy breathing, and going to his bedside, the boy found his father in terrible agony. Gretaly alarmed, he aroused other members of the family and dispatched his younger brother for a doctor. He then returned to his father, and found him breathing his last. It was all so sudden and unexpected, that the family hardly realized the loss they had sustained. No one knows the agony he endured in that short time. He did not complain to the family for fear of alarming them, but bore his pain and suffering with a courage and fortitude that was beautiful as it was unusual. His death was due to acute cholea nostras.
Mr. Annis was born at Oshkosh forty-five years ago, and the editor of this paper taught him his first lesson in reading, in a school in that city when he was but seven years old. He moved his family to this city in 1878 securing a position as filer in Brown Bros. mill, which he filled faithfully up to the time of his death. He was an earnest Christian worker, and his presence and services will bemissed at the M.E. church of which he was a member. He was a member of F. & A. M. and Modern Woodman Orders, carrying $3,000 insurance in the latter. The blow is a most severe one to his aged mother who was expecting at any time to hear of the death of Al. Annis, a brother of the deceased.
Two other brothers survive him, Frank, of Little Chute, Ark. and James, of Memphis, Tenn., the latter attending the funeral. The bereaved family consists of a wife and three children, Reginald, LaRoy and Ethel. The funeral was held from the M.E. church Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. Revs. Sheard and Savage conducted the services. The Masonic burial services were held at the grave.

The Eaton Rapids Review
Eaton Rapids, Michigan, Thursday, October 25, 1900

Brief Sketch of One of the Early Settlers of Eaton Rapids

By the death of Morris St. John Annis, which occurred at noon Thursday, October 18, 1900, one of the early settlers of Eaton Rapids, and widely known among the pioneers of the county, passed away.
He was born of revolutionary stock in the town of Sparta, Livingston county, N.Y., May 22, 1822, where he resided until the year 1843, when he started out on a western trip and landed in Louisville, Ky., where he worked about a year on the Ohio river, from which place he went to the state of Ohio, where he worked in an edge tool factory, returning to his birth place in the state of New York soon after.
In the fall of 1845 he came to Michigan, locating at Eaton Rapids, where he worked at his trade, that of a blacksmith. October 15, 1846, he was united in marriage to Miss Thisbe Ann Ferris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ferris of Eaton Rapids township, after which he located on a farm three miles northwest of the city, where by hard work he made himself quite comfortable in this worlds goods. In his labors he was aided my his good wife, who did her part to build a home for their future years.
As a result of their marriage seven children were born to them, five of whom are now living, viz: Samuel Annis, farmer of Eaton Rapids township; A.(Alvirus)W. Annis, shoe dealer of this city; Mrs. George Seelye (Roxanne) of this city; Mrs. James William Seelye (Sally Ann) of Eaton Rapids township; and Mrs. George Dewey of Mackinac Island.
The older residents of the city were quite well acquainted with the deceased, he having moved here from the farm some 18 years ago, and he was respected by all as a straightforward citizen and a good neighbor. Both Mr. and Mrs. Annis were always pleased to entertain their old friends, and the best from their abundant larder was none too good for those who called to see them. He was the son of Jacob Annis, a soldier of the revolution, and he took pride in informing his friends of the fact.
For many years Mr. Annis was a member of the Baptist Church in this city and during the past two years of his illness he expressed a desire to be taken home to his Lord and Saviour whenever He was ready. His companion, who has also been a great sufferer, is now in feeble health, and has the sympathy of her neighbors and friends in her affliction.
The funeral took place from the Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Dr. Callen of the M.E. church officiating owing to illness of the pastor. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. E.F. Knapp, Mrs. E.B. Spears, Messrs. M. H. Beman and Lewis Hunt. The remains were laid to rest in the Brickyard cemetery two miles west of the city.
