Comments: While this chipset is the top pick by the PC2JAMMA project, and comes highly recommended by many, I simply can't give it a great review. Given its high status, I spent a lot of time getting to know each and every one of the cards above and while their performance did differ a little, they all fell pray to the exact same problems. Occasionally a mode, for no recognizable reason, will go out of sync. It's like looking at an image through a very thin waterfall. Sometimes a slight adjustment in the modeline will bring the mode back into sync, however, this doesn't always work.

All cards with this chipset support interlace modes, though Matrox's G400, SIS's 6326, and particularly Trident's BladeT64 cards produce interlace modes of similar or better quality. As the problems with this card are intermittent, trying to sort out what's actually happening isn't very easy. But from my testing, it didn't seem to be related to pclock values, dot clock multiples (VESA char width, 4 or 8), hclock, or vsync. This card isn't AGP 2.0 compliant and it doesn't support 32bit color in DOS. For those who really want an ATI card, cards with the Rage 128 chipset are a _much_ better alternative. They don't fall pray to any of these issues, support 32bit color in DOS and are typically AGP 2.0 compliant.

Note: several versions of AdvanceMAME were used for testing, dating back to 0.56. The problems listed above affected all releases tested.
