You have 3 buttons to control the action: Shoot, Jump and Select Weapon. As you go thru the levels, you get power-ups in the form of different weapons that you use the "C" button to cycle between. Most of the weapons (other than the "normal") have a limited amount of artillery.
So you should save the good ones for when you are in dire need. You can also get a cyber-bot that circles you to act like a shield. Some of the fun is that you can shoot in any direction and from any direction. The best part of many of the levels is hanging with one hand from something above and blasting everyone with the gun in your other hand. Enemies approach you from all sides: Vehicles, humans, aliens - essentially everything under the sun is trying to kill you. And they move in and approach from all directions. The bosses are big and plentiful but not all that hard to defeat.
Another little added bonus is that at certain places, after certain levels are finished, you get to choose your direction (up or down) and us such control which area you play next. Also, if you choose "down" the first time, you get to play an extremely rare "to-the-left-scrolling" level. Amazing how every horz shooter and fighter scrolls to the right.
Spoiler alert: The funniest part of the game is that when you die, you yell, "I'm a goner!"
