Game of the Day - Dyna Gear

Dyna Gear is a Horizontal Shooter masquerading as a Platformer and it does both things well.  When you first play, it seems like a Platform/Beat-'em-up, but the weapons become so powerful, you wind up shooting almost everything and fighting almost nothing.  You can start the game as a dude or a wolf-thingy.  Along the way you pick up accompaniment in the form of all kinds of animals and dragony looking things.  The graphics are large, colorful and effective.  In fact, maybe too large and colorful in that in can become hectic and a little difficult to determine exactly what's what (for a geezer like me anyway).

You progress through varied levels and meet many mini-bosses and maxi-bosses.  At first, I didn't realize some of the Dinos were looking to join forces with me, but you wind up with a wide variety of helpmates.  As I said at the top, most of the weaponry becomes long range (either when you first get it or upon powering it up), as such, you wind up shooting more than fighting (which is okay, just a little less like a Beat-'em-up).

So, if you like your Platfomers to play like horz shooters, or you like your horz shooters to be rich and colorful cartoons, this is your game.

One final note.  Everywhere I checked referred to the game as Dyna Gear NOT Gears (with an "s").  Even the game's own flyer is ambiguous because it only uses the name in the same font as the title screen, nowhere else on the flyer is the title referred to.  So, to the right, is the title screen for your assessment - I realize that it may just be a super fancy letter "r", but it sure looks like "Dyna Gears" to me.

  1. 0.99u3: Changed description to 'Dyna Gear'

This change was made in MAME because somebody claiming to be one of the designers / programmers of the game posted on the forums that the game was called 'Dyna Gear' NOT Dyna Gears as it was in MAME at the time.
