Staining and Assembly

Once all the pieces were cut, I did a rough fit. It was mostly as I wanted, but the bend in the board was very noticeable, and the holes for the removable media drives was very obvious.

I used a planer to trim the boards to the point where they were flat. I just cut off the section with the removable media drives, planning to cover it with a door.

This is the cabinet after planing, staining, and assembly.

I used a new stain called Barkley's Stain Gel, using the base white stain on the light side and Jet Mahogany on the right. It's very easy to use--the Gel has the consistancy of Crisco Oil. Smear it on, then wipe it off.

The plastic inserts in the holes are for accenting the fans. Someone suggested swapping the black for white, he was right. Later pictures have the black plastic rings on the Ivory side and vice versa.

This is a close-up on the media area. I used dowels for the support bars, holding the hinges and also as a stop for the door. The plastic spacers on the left dowel are part of the hinge assembly.
