Cool Device - the Push/Pull Spinner
The push-pull spinner sounds like something out of Dr Suess. It is a critical component to fully enjoying many games in MAME like the game in my previous post - Mad Planets.
What pushing and pulling does is activate switches. So, on games where you use one hand to move a joystick u/d/l/r and the other hand to spin your ship/player around, you benefit greatly from being able to fire by simply pushing down on the spinner. Otherwise, without a button on top of your JS, you'd have to fumble around for another button constantly. The spinner I play on is very easy to press/pull, and you can easily shoot like crazy all over the place while you are spinning around finding your enemies. Keep in mind that pulling up activates a different switch/button. So, on games like Caliber 50, you can spin around, aim, push to fire and pull to launch a grenade all easily with one hand - while moving around with the JS in your other hand.
Some games off the top of my head that this applies to:
Ikari, Ikari 3, Front Line, Mad Planets, Xybots, Cal.50 and maybe my fav to play this way, Forgotton Worlds. There are, of course, tons of others. Additionally, it works well for driving games where you are also shooting at something.
Here's a link to the one I play with...
