Game of the Day - Challenger
Challenger is a simple. old-school game that is very compelling for some reason I can't totally pinpoint. The graphics are ridiculously simple and the gameplay isn't very exceptional, but all together, the game just turned out fun. You are a ship firing at many angles at geometric shapes that are flying around the screen and careening toward you, while you are anchored to the bottom (moving left & right Space Invaders style). When you hit the shapes (enemies), they split into smaller shapes, Asteroids style. They keep getting smaller with each hit until you finally destroy the smallest fragments. Like many games, you have a smart bomb you can use to kill everything on the screen (one per ship). There are a couple of things that make the game unique... First, there is some weird blue elephant looking thing that trapses across the bottom of the screen. Dock with it and you get a bonus (the faster you dock, the greater the bonus). Second, you have a "warp" button. This button instantly transports you to the opposite side of the screen. So, if you were at the bottom, then you are suddenly at the top - you still move left and right and you fire down at everything (instead of up). Push the button again, and you warp back to the bottom of the screen. You can do this as many times as you wish and it's the use of this button that drastically increases the strategic value of the game. Go check it out.
