Game of the Day - Fever SOS
Known also as Dangun Feveron, Fever SOS is a vert shooter by Cave. In typical Cave style, the game is very colorful and the screen can be loaded with crap that makes it practically impossible to tell what's going - of course, that's half the fun.
The graphics are great and the control and gameplay are very good, but Fever SOS has a weird twist. It has a disco theme. That's right, disco - even though it was developed in the late 90s.
To be fair, the disco theme is light enough that I didn't even know there was a disco theme until I read about the game. Apparently, the music wasn't conclusive enough and I haven't yet reached the big disco ball enemy.
What makes the gameply unique is the cool scoring. When you start, the scoring factor is at one. That is the base score for everything you shoot (that's right, 1). As you kill enemies, prisoners are released from the wreckage, careening down in what are apparently blue disco balls (they just look like blue circles to me). And for some reason, the prisoners are also referred to as cyborgs in some documentation???? Anyway, you have to collect these prisoners. There are tons. Each one you collect, ups your scoring factor by one. So you can quickly get the scoring to be 20, 40 or 50 times what it started at - as you can see, this is a critical part to scoring well. The problem is, if you miss ONE of the prisoners floating around, the scoring factor goes back to one. You get a few chances, because if the prisoners hit the bottom of the screen, they change color and start floating upwards before they disappear altogether. When you face the bosses, you can release more prisoners from their ancillary equipment, but it just pisses them off and they become more aggressive.
It's a weird but inventive game, and you know that because it's Cave, you can't really go wrong.
Lots of choices of equipment and weapons to choose from to start.
