Game of the Day - Soukyuu Gurentai
Also known as "Terra Diver", SK-G (for short) is a nice new-school vert shooter. I don't like some games of this era because the attempt at more realistic graphics leaves the screen a little muddied. Things aren't as sharp/crisp as I'd like them to be and that detracts visually for me. That being said, this is one of the better games of that design. Graphics are nice and flying over the city buildings is a good touch. You can choose from 3 characters and each has diff weapons - although it's a little difficult because in this version everything is in Japanese (I haven't played the Terra Diver (US clone) to know if it's in English).
As usual, the fire button also "charges". And one of your spacecraft has a nice feature where the charge results in a wireframe hemisphere - wherein anything that comes into your hemisphere gets "painted", then when you release the button and fire, guided missiles take out all the painted targets. There are a few games that use this feature as a primary weapon, but it's nice to have it here secondarily.
The MAME info tells you how to play a special Super Hard mode. Good luck with that.

There is no ARC US clone as far as I can tell, but it's also available for PSX and Saturn. Here's a nice list of similar games you probably already know: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38073
ReplyDeleteAnother thing, if I go to the video options within Mame, some games, like this one, have an alternative aspect ratio to choose from. Not all of them and the ratio varies. How come? Are they made for both (never had more than 2) or is the screen simply streched? (That's what it looks like.) But why does Mame think that's ok for some games, I googled hard but can't find an answer so maybe you know ...
Thanks for your time and the great blog, I started with the first post about a week ago and try to play along, lots of catching up to do. Good times. All the best, Toni
